Greyhawk Day # 6: The Darlene Map

One of the best reasons to pick up the original Greyhawk Folio is the gorgeous cartography work of Darlene Pekul. A quick search online will show you many wonderful Greyhawk maps, but to my thinking, there's only one "Darlene"--click on the left and right links at the bottom of this page to see why.

You know, I love those maps... but the font usage on them is, ummm, something...

Darlene is calligrapher foremost. Her maps stand out against all fantasy maps because its coasts and hills and mountains and yes even font usage is entirely by her hand in calligraphy pen. No computer can simulate the personal touch this map has. It is for me, as a GH fan, a work of art more than a game tool.

I always think there's just something about a hand-drawn map, be it someone's homebrew or something done for a professional product...
