Friday Discussion: Who Makes The Best Adventure Modules?

It's a slow, sleepy Friday leading into the weekend (unless you're at DDXP, and then there's a good chance you're not reading this), so I thought I'd open it up to a simple discussion: which current company makes the best adventure modules? Paizo? Goodman Games? XRP? Necromancer/Judges Guild? Wizards of the Coast? What makes their products stand out for you, and which ones in particular are your faves?

Bonus question: What's your favorite module of all time?

I'm going to agree with Rainswept here, I think Paizo has the lion's share of best modules currently. But I do prefer the longer Adventure Paths.

My favorite module of all time is without question I6: Ravenloft. It broke the adventure mold when it was released and I have very fond memories playing through it and later running it.

Ravenloft is going to have to take the nod for best all time, how many other modules have spawned an entire game line?

Question, was this before or after White Wolf's Vampire?

Other than that, I have to go with the original ICE Middle Modules. Wonderfuly done with fantastic art. I haven't seen their like since.

I do have to give a passing shout out to original Deadlands and early Shadowrun. Although they had their faults (often very serious), they had some great ideas.

In today's worlds, I don't have much contact with Modules. Most game lines I follow only do supplements, and I think they suffer for it in the market.

Currently, I'd go with Paizo as well. I like the fact that most are not the classic dungeon crawl.

As for best modules. The Desert of Desolation series would be my vote.

BTW - I should be not be eligible for the prize (since I reviewed the product in question and have an advance copy so to speak)

My favorite current module publisher is Expeditious Retreat Press (ERP), which publishes old-school AD&D modules under the OSRIC rubric. My favorite ERP module is The Pod-Caverns of the Sinister Shroom, by Matthew Finch.

My favorite modules of all time are Gary Gygax's three D modules. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with D2: The Shrine of the Kuo-Toa.

I'll admit that I haven't purchased a module by any of the current crop of publishers. I'm much more inclined to build my own adventures from scratch, so I can't comment on the quality of recent publications.

My favorite module of all time, however, is In Search of the Unknown simply because it allows every referee a great amount of room to riff on the threadbare structure provided and to truly make it his or her own.

Another vote for Paizo here.

My favorite is probably Ravenloft. I loved that adventure when it was new. I see its flaws now, but at the time it was amazing.

I would have to agree with Paizo, but that is based on their Dungeon magazines circa 2004-2006. I've bought very few gaming products since then and what things I have bought have not blown me away.

And, as I've said elsewhere, S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth is my personal favorite.

On my own blog, I argue that for my own games I've liked Necromancer Games better than Paizo or Goodman Gamces.

Just as products I'm really impressed with stuff from Troll Lord Games right now.

My fave?
To run? Keep on the Borderlands.
To play? Isle of Dread

I enjoy reading Paizo's adventures but I'm not too sure I would enjoy playing or running one - even if it was converted to something like B/X, S&W or C&C.

I actually don't mind some of the 4E adventures I have seen as they are mostly set pieces, have some new takes on things and would be easy to covert to a system I would prefer.

I have got the most mileage out of Necromancer's adventures so I would have to say them. Barakus is the "tent pole" for my current C&C campaign.

Honestly, the adventures I have enjoyed reading the most lately are Sham's one-pagers for Dismal Depths and Mike's 2-pagers for Stonehell.

As for favorite all time... Keep on the Borderlands or Lost City.

I agree that Paizo has the best production standards at the moment, but I don't care too much for the style that's popular at the moment (Called dungeonpunk on some parts of the internet). The favourite module I ever played was Shadows over Bogenhofen for the old Warhammer Fantasy RPG. Great player handouts and a nice mix of grim and humorous. There were two or three sequels, but I never got to play them.

My favorite module ever was Tomb of Horrors... I think I lost about 40 characters in there over the years...

I'm a subscriber to the Paizo module/supplement sets, and was a subscriber to the DCC line until it dropped 3.5. But the modules, that I enjoy most and are most expectant for are the work of Wolfgang's Open Design.

Empire of the Ghouls being my current favourite.
