Friday Discussion: How Do You Store Or Carry Your Dice?

It’s been a good, productive week here at RPG Blog 2, and we don’t take Fridays off. We do, however, ask for readers to participate in a little informal Friday Discussion! Nothing too serious, nothing too intense, just some gamers talking about their hobby before the weekend kicks off.

This Week’s Question: How Do You Store/Carry Your Dice? Whether you’ve discovered the beautiful precision of Gamescience, the intricate designs of Q-Workshop, the metallic wonders of Crystal Caste, or stick faithfully with Koplow or Chessex, what do you use to port your dice around? Some custom-made leather dice bag? The infamous Crown Royal bag? A chainmail design, perhaps? Or is good old cloth good enough for your dice?

Links to dice bag/storage pics welcomed! Have a great weekend, and roll on our random chart below to see what late night movie you’ll catch that you watch much longer than you likely should:

Roll 2d6 (+1 if past 2:00 am):

2: Gremlins 2: The New Batch
3: Bloodsport
4: American Ninja IV
5: Today You Die
6: Meatballs III: Summer Job
7: Porky’s II: The Next Day
8: Beat Street
9: Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation
10: Half Past Dead
11: Killer Clowns From Outer Space
12: Carnosaur
13: Carnosaur 2

All levity aside for a moment, 8 years later, we still remember the innocent men, women, and children who lost their lives to a senseless, terrible act of terror. Those of us who lost friends that day know more than ever how precious life, beauty, family, friendship and joy are, and we honor their memory by celebrating those things every day.

I have used a leather dice bag for years now. If you ask me that's the only true way to store your dice. :)

I used a pringles can, now I found a big cloth bag that holds most of my dice. I have also a cigarrete case for carrying a small amount of dice.

I've actually got a bag-within-a-bag. My solid pewter dice (what an awesome sound they make when they hit the table!) are in a leather bag. But that bag is, along with tons of my "regular" dice and my Dragonbone electronic dice-roller (still working after all these years) are in a suede RPGA zippered bag from the early 1980's. I couldn't find a picture of one online, but I'll try to snap one when I get home tonight.

I've never owned a dice bag(!) - I have my dice in the tray at the bottom of my dice tower.

I use a hard plastic box with an integrated hinged lid I liberated from my brother sometime about 1980 and a cigar box I picked up sometime in the past decade for my dice storage and transport purposes.

I keep my dice in a box with an eye on it. My fiance makes them. Here's the one I used to use. I should post a picture of my current one...

Loved the comment about the Crown Royal bag. I think everyone either had one or knew someone that used one for their dice. (Back in high school, that was quite the status symbol.) I prefer to use Ye Olde Dice Bagge I picked up at some long-forgotten convention. Love the sound of dice rattlin' around in a cloth bag. Sounds like gaming's afoot!

I have a fuzzy cloth bag that I bought in the 80s at some point. No idea where I got it, though. I was buying most of my RPG stuff at the Waldenbooks in the Mall and they didn't carry that sort of thing, from what I remember. Might have gotten it at the comic shop downtown, though.

I also have a knitted bag a coworker made. I keep a couple sets I use most often in there, and the rest in the old bag.

I used a felt bag that I got at a local gaming shop for years, until it finally wore through. For the past eight years or so I've used a sturdy zipper-bag I got in one of Palladium's annual Christmas Grab Bags.

Crown Royal bag that Grim gave me. I recently downsized from the full-scale dice bag to just a set of Zocchi dice. I have two sets, plus a black d20 - because what DM can do without a black d20?

For no good reason, the dice are inside their boxes inside the dice bag. I don't know why.

My main dice bag (with my d30, my GameScience polyhedrals, and the d8 Zach gave to Stuart to give to me) is a Skull & Crossbones affair:

The rest of my dice are stored in a sack my daughter decorated with a 3-eyed, six-legged, flying unicorn monster:

@Joseph: I have some gamescience pewter percentiles! My players call them “the Tablewreckers”. They are formidable, and only used for Serious Business.

@Jeff: You still have that d8? I’m honored! One of these days, I’ll have to swap it out/upgrade for a Gamescience of your choice. I recommend a d5, 16, or 24.

My general pool of dice is was in a Dawn (Linser) lunchbox. The handle just broke so I am painting a 40k themed box to replace it. Any crystal caste dice stay in their leather pouches, my old Vampire dice go in an altoids box, and some of my really ancient or specialty dice go in the TSR pouches that came with Dragon Dice ages ago.

The metal box with the sliding lid I had to make in shop class about 21 years ago.

I have my dice in a nice cloth bag, embroidered by my wife. But earlier today I almost panicked when I realized my Gamescience d6 set, of ten, was gone!

Naturally I had placed them were they belonged, in my Tunnels & Trolls 7.5 box. Order restored.
