One thing about skills: One facet of some older games was the idea that being an adventurer wasn't a character's day job, and so skills that might never be used in play were important. This was true in old-school GURPS, where a character's "down time" income depended on certain skills.
To use, Indiana Jones as an example, remember he was Professor Jones - when he's not gallivanting around, he's a teacher. So during down time, his Teaching skill would be rolled against to determine his income.
