Castles & Crusades Classic Monsters

I know I haven't posted much lately, but I had to share the news on the Castles & Crusades Kickstarter project from Troll Lord Games. Classic Monsters: The Manual looks to be a fun book for C&C fans, and the Kickstarter deal seems solid. Drawing from sources such as the Fiend Folio and Monster Manual II, this should give campaigns some new monsters to play about with. At the $25 level (where I pledged), you get an autographed hardcover copy of the book, an electronic copy (either pdf, Nook, or iTunes), acknowledgment in the book credits, and 5 of the Troll Lord coins.

If you're a C&C fan, you don't want to miss getting in on this. I'm curious to see if this is successful if it becomes a model the Trolls use for more products.

My only concern is the legality of the project. Most of what is in the original AD&D MMII and Fiend Folio are not covered in the OGL and SRD.

I am wondering how they are getting around that problem. I hope they have done their homework or there could be trouble.

The entire problem I have with C&C is not enough monsters other than that a great game. This will solve the problem I hope.

I know what you mean. I never understood why the entirety of the SRD monster section was never fully utilized.

Actually, many monsters from AD&D FF and MMII were released as open game content by Necromancer Games with WotC's permission in the Tome of Horrors, so perhaps they are working from that.

From what I remember Necromancer's use of those monsters was under a special license agreement with WOTC. This was also how Necromancer got away with using Mind Flayers in their reworked Wilderlands.

Hopefully, someone with a better understanding of how all that worked will chime in.

From what has been posted at the forums, the Trolls seem aware of the legal issues. Also, I just got this in an email today from the Trolls (emphasis added):

@Josh - not in Tome of Horrors. They are clearly listed as Open Game Content in the book with instructions for anyone to re-use and re-publish under the OGL. WotC very generously gave them permission at the time to release them as Open Game Content. Not everything from MMII and FF is in Tome of Horrors, but a lot of monsters are.

Thanks, Brian. Sporadic article--seemed like a neat project, thought I'd share.

As author of the book, I figured I'd chime in. Actually, very little of the content from the MM2 and FF is protected by WotC and thus not usable. Mind Flayers, Beholders, Gith, Slaad... a few more that I can't recall. For the most part, the content is open and usable. I tried changing some stuff up, making creatures as the Flail Snail and Flumph a bit more intimidating. Thanks for the interest!

That clears it up for me. I couldn't remember the exact details of how the Necromancer and WOTC worked things out and was just concerned on the legal issues.

That said this looks like a winner!
